Welcome to the La Grande Ourse restaurant.

La Grande Ourse is a family run restaurant on Mont Chèry at an altitude of 1750metres (5742 feet)  overlooking the picturesque mountain village of Les Gets in the French Alps. Les Gets is located between Chamonix and Geneva, an hour from the two. It’s a beautiful village with great links to Morzine, Avoriaz and the rest of the Portes de Soleil area.

We are the Venning family, and we have come over from Cornwall, in the South West of Venning family at La Grande ourseEngland. We came over to France nearly 6 years ago and saw that the restaurant was up for sale. We fell in love with the restaurant and the amazing view of Mont Blanc. We brought the restaurant in March 2006 and have been renovating it ever since. It is still a work in progress, but we have done most of the work ourselves. We had help with the bits we are not skilled in such as the stone work.

La Grande Ourse was one of the first Altitude restaurants created in the Alps in the 1930’s. The building we now use in the third generation to occupy the site. It was designed specifically to make the most of its 180˚ panoramic view of the Mont Blanc massif.

For the 2012 season we continue to offer the amazing evening candlelit dinner on our Kassbohrer. Please go to the whats new page to find out more information!

We see the return this season of our excellent English chef Ross Venning. He offers a wide variety of dishes from good old sausage and mash to our La Grande Ourse speciality lobster and scallop tartiflette. His delicious twist on a favourite regional dish. If you go to our menu page then you can see our current menus.

We also offer a daily menu de ski which is a main meal served with a desert for the great price of 15 euros.

New in 2012 we have converted the downstairs boarders bar into La Italienne offering delicious pizza & pasta cooked by an expert Italian chef. On this floor we offer a hi – tech pager system, where you order and pay for your food and we buzz you to come and collect it when it’s ready.

You can sit inside or on a nice sunny day or sit out on the snow terrace, relax and enjoy the view.

On the second floor we have our main restaurant and terrace. On this floor we offer waitress service so you can enjoy what has been acclaimed since the 1930’s as one of the best views of Mont Blanc in the Alps.

In our main restaurant you can sit back and relax with a great meal and a nice bottle of wine.

Have a look through our site, you will find are menus, weather up dates for the day, and a few pictures of all the work we have done.

We hope you enjoy the site, we would love to hear from you if you would like to leave us any comments.

    Hi there
Do you have a table for two on Wednesday 15th February?
How far is the pick up point from the centre of Les Gets?

    Thanks

We’ve had some fabulous lunches with you and this year we would like to try you for dinner. How easy is it to get a taxi up to you in the evenings? Do you accept children (4 of them all over 6 years)…and have we left it too late for dinner on New Years Eve or New Years Day?
    Many thanks

    Hello

We are in Les Gets for 1 week from New Year’s Eve. Do you have any space
for night time on the 4th or 5th Jan? Do you accommodate children on your
pisten-bully midweek dinners and are they at full price? How many people
can be accommodated in the pisten bully? Do you know approximately how much
a taxi or transfer might be from La Turche to the pick-up / drop-off? Is it
    easy to arrange?

    Thanks

    Dave

Hi guys I have heard about your fantastic restaurant and wondered if you had room for a hard working Brit keen to do work with you during the 11/12 season. It would be a wonderful opportunity for me so and I am sure I will make a great addition to the team so I really hope that you still have some vacancies. I am happy to do whatever is needed but my UK experience is mainly in waiting, bar work with low level kitchen duties. If you can e mail me back I would be delighted to send you a CV. Hope to hear from you soon. Regards, Kane Whitney (Age 21)

    Good afternoon

We came to eat at La Grande Ourse earlier this year with our friends Mike & Breid, who I think you all know. They mentioned that possibility of booking the Piste Bully for a dinner. There will be five of us staying in Les Gets over Christmas and I would love to book for supper one evening. At this stage, it could be any of the following nights at whatever time is convenient for you…
    Dec 27
    Dec 28
    Dec 29
    Dec 30

Would you please let me know which date works for you and if you would like a deposit? Many thanks in advance – Craig Hassall.

My family had lunch at La Grande Ourse today and we are kicking ourselves. We have been coming to Les Gets for years and have not made the effort to eat at La Grande Ourse before, what were we doing ?!? Wow, what a setup. Amazing views. The views over Mont Blanc are something else and you are looking down at Les Gets, so you get a piste map- esque view of the resort. On a day like today with blue skies and cloud in the valleys, there cannot be many better restaurant views in the Alps. All of the above is before we even get to the food and the service. Its a great menu with a plethora of tempting options. When the food did arrive, it was originally conceived and presented, with perfectly cooked meat and some novel flavour combinations. The deserts did not disappoint either, with excellent execution and interpretation of some classics. This was all delivered in a very efficient manner in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. All in all, we had a great day and are looking forward to going back soon. Glenn and Fi

Just back from a second trip to Les Gets this year and another feast of food from the Grande Ourse. Can’t believe I was eating Lobster in a mountain restuarant on Saturday and for a price well below city price! We were welcomed back by the Venning family once again and spent many a long lunch and fine wine in the restaurant before skiing sedately down the slope in the late afternoon. Thanks for a great Alpine experience – I have been telling all my skiing friends to call to see you if they are in the area.
    We’ll be back next year,
    Elaine and David Taylor, Ireland

  15. Hi

We came to Le Grande Ourse a week ago and had the most wonderful lunch of the whole week, my husband had the special of the day , which was spicy pork tenderloin on apricot roasted vegetables and potatoes with a cassis jus. He has been telling all our friends about this meal, I would like to cook it at home as a surprise for him, is there any chance chef would be prepared to share his receipe? ?

    Hello,

Your restaurant has the best view of the portes du soleil from any pointe i have stod at.

please may you email a contact email. i would like to ask you about your restaurant.

    thank you very much

  17. what? do we still have a well-kept secret? I am amazed that the site isnt full of chat about this being the only place to have lunch! Our family has held memories from last year about this being the best Christmas lunch we ever had. What can compete with fluffy snow, overlooking 40 peaks in sunshine, brilliant food, lovely hosts and a crumble that is sex in a plate? please keep us a table this year!! I even remember getting to cuddle the baby … you are one of the highlights of our holiday in Portes du Soleil, for sure. Best wishes for 2010.
