Welcome

view

Good morning it’s Sunday 15th February and this is our beautiful view this morning. The conditions are absolutely superb and it’s going to be a lovely sunny day.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

Welcome to the La Grande Ourse restaurant. We are a family run restaurant on Mont Chèry in the picturesque mountain village of Les Gets in the French Alps. Les Gets is located between Chamonix and Geneva, an hour from the two. It’s a beautiful village with great links to Morzine, Avoriaz and the rest of the Portes de Soleil area.

lagrandeourseWe are the Venning family, and we have come over from Cornwall, in the South West of England. We came over to France 3½ years ago and saw that the restaurant was up for sale. We fell in love with the restaurant and the amazing view of Mont Blanc. We brought the restaurant in March 2006 and have been renovating it ever since. It is still a work in progress, but we have done most of the work ourselves. We had help with the bits we are not skilled in such as the stone work.

La Grande Ourse was one of the first Altitude restaurants created in the Alps in the 1930’s. The building we now use in the third generation to occupy the site. It was designed specifically to make the most of its 180˚ panoramic view.
We have with us this season a brilliant English chef called Gary Massey. He also worked with us last season. He offers a wide variety of dishes from good old sausage and mash to lobster and scallop tartiflette. His delicious twist on a favourite regional dish. If you go to our menu page then you can see our current menus.

We also offer a daily menu de ski which is a main meal served with a desert for the great price of 15 euros.
We have brought a taste of Cornwall with us into the Alps. Firstly we have Sausages from Ansome Bangers in Looe, Cornwall. He made for us Wild boar sausages, venison sausages and pork and stilton sausages (We use one of each flavour for our sausage and mash). The second thing we have brought with us is the good old Cornish Pasty. We have traditional steak, Balti chicken pasty for those who like something a bit spicy, and we also have Cheese, tomato and basil pasty for the vegetarians.
When you come to visit us we have on the ground floor our boarders bar, where we serve snacks such as paninis and pasties. On this floor we offer a hi – tech pager system, where you order and pay for your food and we buzz you to come and collect it when it’s ready.

You can sit inside or a nice sunny day sit out on the snow terrace, relax and enjoy the view.
On the second floor we have our main restaurant and terrace. On this floor we offer waitress service so you can enjoy what has been acclaimed since the 1930’s as one of the best views of Mont Blanc in the Alps.

In our main restaurant you can sit back and relax with a great meal and a nice bottle of wine.
Have a look through our site, you will find are menus, weather up dates for the day, and a few pictures of all the work we have done.
We hope you enjoy the site, we would love to hear from you if you would like to leave us any comments.

    Hello there,

After 3 memorable visits to your restaurant in just one weeks holiday to Morzine last year we have decided to take things a little further this year and spend a full season. After several interesting conversations last year with you i thought i would have nothing to lose by asking how i would go about applying for any possible vacancies to spend the season working with you at La Grande Ourse? Hope to hear from you soon,

Thank you in advance James Moore

Hi, I was just wondering if you are still looking for winter staff? I kind of thought about it late this year so am giving a quick effort to find something more interesting for the winter.

    Thanks.

what? do we still have a well-kept secret? I am amazed that the site isnt full of chat about this being the only place to have lunch! Our family has held memories from last year about this being the best Christmas lunch we ever had. What can compete with fluffy snow, overlooking 40 peaks in sunshine, brilliant food, lovely hosts and a crumble that is sex in a plate? please keep us a table this year!! I even remember getting to cuddle the baby … you are one of the highlights of our holiday in Portes du Soleil, for sure. Best wishes for 2010.

    Hi there,
We spioke to you last year about you building a Champagne bar? Is this still happening? We are having a big 40th party in Les Gets next January (2011)and wondered what was happening with your lovely restaurant? There were talks of evening trips there? I look forward to hearing from you,

    Happy Birthday Ed!
Can’t believe that you are 20; it does not seem 2 minutes since “Row, row, row the boat….”!
What a fantastic place to be on your birthday, have a drink on us and we will reimburse you when we next see you, when the snow melts.

    Hi

We came to Le Grande Ourse a week ago and had the most wonderful lunch of the whole week, my husband had the special of the day , which was spicy pork tenderloin on apricot roasted vegetables and potatoes with a cassis jus. He has been telling all our friends about this meal, I would like to cook it at home as a surprise for him, is there any chance chef would be prepared to share his receipe? ?

Just back from a second trip to Les Gets this year and another feast of food from the Grande Ourse. Can’t believe I was eating Lobster in a mountain restuarant on Saturday and for a price well below city price! We were welcomed back by the Venning family once again and spent many a long lunch and fine wine in the restaurant before skiing sedately down the slope in the late afternoon. Thanks for a great Alpine experience – I have been telling all my skiing friends to call to see you if they are in the area.
    We’ll be back next year,
    Elaine and David Taylor, Ireland
